This doesn't look very exciting, to be honest, and will involve the Jaguars travelling vast distances to play in front of, likely, small crowds.
| Quote: | The International Rugby Board has established the Americas Rugby Championship, which will kick off on September 7 2009.
The Americas Rugby Championship will build on the success of the North America 4 tournament that it replaces, and is a key component of the IRB's Strategic Investment Programme, which includes significant investment in USA, Canada and Argentina.
The new tournament features six teams, including four provincial sides from Canada joined by the Argentina Jaguars and USA 'A'. The format unites Rugby in North and South America in a high performance sub-international structure for the first time.
“The Americas Rugby Championship is a huge step forward for elite Rugby in North and South America,” said Mark Egan, IRB Head of Development and Performance.
“Canada, USA and Argentina are priority Unions for our High Performance investment programme and their domestic based players and coaches require a tournament format that exposes them to high level cross border competition on a more regular basis.”
“The tournament is currently structured to primarily focus on our High Performance Unions in the Region, however, it is hoped that it will expand over time to include other countries such as Uruguay, Chile, Mexico and Brazil.”
Canadian Regional teams Atlantic, Ontario, Prairies and British Columbia will re-ignite traditional rivalries in a round robin pool taking place in September. The top four will qualify for the semi-finals held on October 10, with the finals taking place on October 17 in Toronto.
“The ARC competition is key to developing the link between our domestic rugby structure and our national team program. The competition will provide our domestic based athletes with high performance structures and competition pathways that will be used to strengthen our domestic player base on a annualized basis,” said Graham Brown, Rugby Canada Chief Executive Officer.
Nigel Melville, USA Rugby Chief Executive, said: “The ARC will provide Eagles head coach Eddie O’Sullivan and his coaches with an opportunity to observe and work with domestically based potential Eagles players prior to the important November international window. The introduction of Argentina and possible expansion to include other teams in the future is an exciting expansion of our cross border aspirations for the event.”
Porfirio Carreras, Unión Argentina de Rugby President, added: “The Americas need to grow in the practice of our sport through competition. Argentina is determined to do everything possible to help this happen, and in conjunction with the USA and Canada we support the IRB initiative in introducing this tournament to further expand and develop the Game in our continent.”

This looks a little more promising for the sport in North America:

Ghana ran out 17-7 winners over Burkina Faso on the final day of the pool stages to top Pool B and set up a CAR (Confederation of African Rugby) Development Trophy final against defending champions Niger in Lomé, Togo, on Saturday.
They had opened their campaign with a convincing 44-0 defeat of Togo II - who had stepped following Chad's late withdrawal - and then drew 5-5 with Nigeria, so knew victory over Burkina Faso was a necessity if they were to reach the final.
Niger, who beat Burkina Faso in last year's final, finished top of Pool A with an identical record to Ghana, having beaten Benin 10-3, drawn 11-11 with Mali and then edged hosts Togo 6-3 in the pool decider on Wednesday.
The other matches on the final day will see Togo face Burkina Faso in the third place play-off, Nigeria meet Mali with fifth spot at stake and Togo II tackle Benin with both sides seeking a first victory.
"This tournament is a crucial part of African rugby’s development," said IRB Regional Development Manager for Africa, Jean-Luc Barthes.
"Through more regular competition, these countries are growing their rugby effectively and can one day hope to challenge the likes of Kenya, Uganda and Madagascar in the next tier of competition in Africa."
Pool A:
Togo 6-5 Mali
Niger 10-3 Benin
Niger 11-11 Mali
Togo 6-5 Benin
Niger 6-3 Togo
Mali 11-0 Benin
Pool B:
Burkina Faso 17-7 Nigeria
Ghana 44-0 Togo II
Burkina Faso 43-0 Togo II
Ghana 5-5 Nigeria
Burkina Faso 7-17 Ghana
Togo II 0-43 Nigeria

China - A note on a chinese rugby site says that in the country there are just 1000 rugby players. In Japan: 700.000. Most of the chinese players come from the army.
There are also some images (probably already known, but I haven't seen them before) of the Clint Eastwood's making movie about rugby (again, after the rugby scenes in "The departed", with Matt Damon) http://www.irbchina.com/ns_detail.php?i ... h=&catid=0
Georgia - As Gigi Ugulava, major of the city, reported to journalists, the building of a rugby town in Tbilisi will begin in 2010. “Between the suburbs of Varketili and Vazisubani there are about 30 hectares of earth, which at present are used as the dump of construction garbage. We will build here the new city of rugby… about 15 areas for the trainings and entire necessary infrastructure for conducting of tournaments and championships of any level”, said Ugulava.

Israel - Other results from Maccabiah Games: Australia vs S.Africa 17-5, Israel vs Canada 39-5, Usa vs Chile 90-5. The semifinals (tomorrow) will be Israel vs Australia and Great Britain vs Usa.
Taiwan - Published pools and fixtures of the rugby 7s tournament (24-25 july) in the World Games, the just started games of non-olympic sports.
Pool A: South Africa, Usa, Portugal, Taipei.
Pool B: Fiji, Argentina, Japan, Hong Kong.

From Hugo in Caracas:
Venezuela has lost both the finals of the Third iberoamerican championship.
Las Rozas (Spa) won 13-8 in the men's competition (for Venezuela: penk Andrés Rodríguez, try Rodrigo Salas).
Antioquia (Col) won 22-17 in the women's (for Venezuela: try plus conv Adriana González, try Ingrid Griffin..).
Surprising (and a bit disappointing) to see that a club ranked in the middle of the third (and last) level of the spanish championships is stronger than the sixth and the seventh national teams of South America.
Final rank
M: 1 Las Rozas, 2 Venezuela, 3 Colombia, 4 Colombia U21
W: 1 Antioquia, 2 Venezuela, 3 Bogotà, 4 Santander

From Ziggy in Trinidad:
Harvard scored a hard fought 20-8 victory over Police at the St James Barracks on Saturday in week two action of the 2009 Toyota Rugby championship.
Harvard with club head coach Larry Mendez and nine players away in Cayman Island last week on national duty at the Caribbean U 19 Rugby championship lost to Rainbow 57-15.
On Saturday, the youthful Harvard team struggled through out to impose themselves on the lawmen.Leading 5-3 at half-time.Harvard had to withstand a determined Police fight back in the second -half.
With ten minutes to go Police had cut the Harvard lead to 10-8 .However, two unconverted tries in quick succession secured the Harvard win.
After the match Mendez a top local referee and former national rugby player acknowledged that his players did not impose themselves on the game as he would have liked .
" We are a young team.Average age is 21 years. This type of game can only help the players. They hard to work hard for the victory this afternoon. It wasn't pretty. They played with a lot of character . We will improve as the season progresses" said Mendez.

Tournament in Botswana:
Madagascar 22-31 Zimbabwe
Botswana 16-10 Zambia
Mauritius 10-9 Reunion
Madagascar seems to be going backward after its rapid rise a few years ago, when it reached the all-African final and drew a crowd of 30,000 to that game.
Zambia has been going downhill for a long, long time, and seems about rock bottom now.

| Quote: | Zimbabwe and hosts Botswana will meet on the final day of the CAR (Confederation of African Rugby) Southern Trophy in Gaborone to determine who finishes with an unbeaten record after both recorded wins on Wednesday.
Botswana ran out 39-17 winners over Réunion in the opening match one day two, while Zimbabwe edged Mauritius 14-8 and Madagascar bounced back from a first day defeat to beat Zambia 36-15.
The hosts had been tied at 3-3 before tries from centre Jeremy Babbage and wing Tshonganetso Katse sent them in with a 14-point advantage at half time at the University of Botswana.
Further tries from replacement hooker Thato Maifala, number 8 Johan van Niekerk and second row Munya Mahonda made certain of victory with wing Thomas Ample and centre Marcel Haorau touching down for Réunion.
Unanswered run
Zimbabwe had a tougher time against Mauritius, who opened the scoring through Robert Boulle's 16th minute penalty. It was Zimbabwe, though, who led 11-3 at the break following two penalties from Tichafara Makwanya and wing Gardner Nechironga's try.
Makwanya increased that advantage with a third penalty, but while replacement prop crossed for a try in the 65th minute, Mauritius could not find another score to claim a famous victory.
The day's final match pitted Zambia against Madagascar, two sides who had lost to Botswana and Zimbabwe on day one. Zambia scored the opening try through wing Isaac Munganga to lead 8-3 inside 10 minutes.
However a run of 26 unanswered points - including four tries with a brace from fly half Sidonie Rakotoarisoa - set Madagascar on the road to victory. Nigel Chibwe did cross for Zambia, but Madagascar had the final say with Bienvenu Mananjarasoa's try five minutes from time.
The tournament, which sees the six teams play across the two pools, concludes on Saturday when Madagascar face Réunion, Mauritius meet Zambia and Botswana tackle Zimbabwe.

China - Zheng Luo Qian, a main chinese actress, is the role-lader in a movie up in these days in the chinese theaters. "Assault the fifth space", this is the traduct title, have also rugby scenes like this: http://www.irbchina.com/pic/20090722091421670.jpg http://www.zhengluoqian.com/
On august 1 the city of Yantai (north-east coast) hosts the (first?) women's chinese national 7s championship. At present the nation approximately has 40 man teams and 10 female teams, according to irbchina site. It's funny because in China they (or babelfish?) call rugby "the olive sport".
Israel - The final day of Maccabiah Games's rugby XV tournament, reserved to israelian or jewish players. South Africa vs Canada 12-5, Israel vs Usa 3-43, Australia vs Great Britain 19-16.
Final rank: 1 Australia, 2 Great Britain, 3 United States, 4 Israel, 5 South Africa, 6 Canada, 7 Chile.
Kenya - Safari 7s has been played one month ago, but I had not heard about it and I discovered with pleasure the results. It's nice to see Kenya defeating teams like Samoa and Emerging South Africa (40-19 in the final game!). Safari Sevens 2009 has been an excellent tourney with 8 national teams and 2 "almost" national teams (emerging boks and les blues). The only negative input is that perhaps there's the risk that kenya will "forgive" the rugby XV. For their best backs is certainly more satisfactor to play sevens, where they compete with the best teams in the world, than XV, where they know they are not going to be a top 20 team in the world in the next ten years, id est before the end of their career.
Safari Sevens '09, final ranking: 1 Kenya, 2 Emerging Boks (Saf), 3 Samoa, 3 Samurai (invitational), 5 Western Raiders (Aus), 6 Chairman's Select (Ken), 7 Zimbabwe, 7 Grenoble (Fra), 9 Bristol (Eng), 10 Les Blues (Fra), 11 Uganda, 11 Shujaa (Ken), 13 Japan, 14 Zambia, 15 Morocco, 15 Tanzania.
Slovakia - If I have well understood (and of course this is unprobably) Slovan Bratislava, perhaps the only slovak rugby club, will play in the next season in the second level of czech championship, after having played in the last seasons in the hungarian championship. http://slovan.rugby.cz/slovan-v-ceske-1-kb-lize
Spain - The national main team starts its training for the 2009/10 season with a stage in Meymac (France) from 2 to 9 august. On saturday 8th they will play a friendly match against Aurillac, french PRO D2. Spanish coach is Ged Glynn; helpers are Jon Curry, Mike Umaga, Andy Titterrall, Dusty Hare, Stephane Ferriere and Simon Hardy. The national team (this is interesting...) will play in the European Challenge Cup 2009/10 with the name of "Olympus XV". List of convocated players is on http://www.ferugby.com

Newport Legend Rod Snow will be keeping his eye out for the Canadian stars of the future as he brings a Newfoundland provincial side to Rodney Parade on Saturday (2:30pm.)
The friendly match against Snow’s former team will give the top players from Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Prince Edward Island the opportunity to show their mettle in the run-up to the province’s IRB Americas Cup campaign.
“I’ll be very interested to see how Frank Walsh who has just got his first Canadian cap fares in the front row and Ciaran Hearn who will be playing in our back division,” said Snow. “Dean Blanks and Morgan Lovell are also ex-Newport boys who will certainly have a point to prove as will the non-Newfoundland players representing us for the first time.
“I can’t wait to take to the field. It’s been a few years since I last played at Rodney Parade, although I was over in Cardiff for the World Cup back in 2007. I have nothing but great memories of Rodney Parade and the people I met here.
“Newport will certainly give us an opportunity to test ourselves today and greatly assist us in preparing the team to face international competition should we make the final.
“There’s a lot of nostalgia for me about this match but at the same time I am looking forward to getting my hands dirty and knocking up against a few old faces!”

Ukraine - On july 24 the first session of the council about the creation of a Professional Rugby League took place. "If we do not undertake the concrete actions, directed toward the development of rugby and its popularization already today, then tomorrow none super-leagues will remain; simply cause no one will play", said the director of professional league Maxim Surkov. The bigger problem is the money. "There are not", said all the clubs. At the moment 4 clubs accepted to enter in the PRL. "Not a small number", commented Surkov: "in Russia there are just 6 professional clubs and their rugby grow up and they have just won the European 7s". Second session of the council on july 30.

The chief executive of Queensland Rugby Ken Freer today announced that he had tendered his resignation to the QRU Board. Mr Freer said his resignation would take effect on 31 October, 2009.
Meanwhile, Stateside:
GLENDALE, Colo. – The top 40 prospective athletes for both the Under-20 National Team and High School All-American programs converged on Glendale’s Infinity Park last week for the USA Rugby Boys’ Age-Grade Training Camp.
The 80 players were selected based off their performance from the six regional All-Star tournaments around the country, as well as from the H.S. National Championships, Collegiate National All-Stars and coach recommendations.
"We were very pleased to get this number of quality athletes into camp and started on their journey toward becoming a senior Eagle,” High School All-American Coach Scott Lawrence said. “The camp served as a quality baseline for us and now the real work begins of maturing some players and continuing to identify others."
The camp, which ran from Monday, July 20 through Sunday July 26, included strength and conditioning testing, strength and conditioning workouts, educational seminars, prehabilitation and core workouts/seminars, a nutritional seminar with USAR nutritional consultant Adam Russell, and skill development focusing primarily on ball handling and contact skills. Players went through film study of their training throughout the week, and the forwards got the opportunity to work with the USA Men’s National Team scrum coach, Bill LeClerc, while the scrum-halves got some time to work on their passing with USA Rugby’s CEO and President of Rugby Nigel Melville
Both teams also had an inter-squad scrimmage on Saturday, followed by a film study review, and exit one-on-one meetings, where individual development programs were delivered to each player. The scrimmage was also viewed by USA Eagles Head Coach Eddie O’Sullivan, who spoke with both teams following their scrimmage.
The young players were also allowed to watch some of the Collegiate All-Americans training prior to the team’s departure for South Africa.
“Every one of the players and coaches worked tremendously hard throughout the week and significant gains were made in the players’ and teams’ development,” Age-Grade Program Director Matt Sherman said. “It was particularly nice to have all three teams (the Collegiate All-Americans, Under-20s and the High School All-Americans), training in close quarters throughout the week.
“Players at various levels were able to see that they are part of a development pathway toward becoming a senior Eagle, and players at the High School All-American and U-20 levels got to see and experience firsthand what the next level looks like and how to get there.”
The new Under-20 Coach, Ray Lehner, and his staff were also pleased with the progress the team made, but weren’t naïve in the amount of work that still lies ahead.
“The boys rose to every challenge, and stayed engaged the entire week,” Lehner said. “It’s a good beginning, but we still have a lot of work to do."
Coaches and players from both teams are anticipating the next camp to be during Christmas break, which will likely include an international match. All the details have yet to be confirmed.
The players invited to this camp include:

Stellenbosch, South Africa—In some muddy conditions left from a winter storm earlier in the day the 2009 Collegiate All-Americans presented by USA Sevens, LLC fought off a tough Stellenbosch Markotters side that looked to defend its home field advantage to the death. The final score of 36-24 was in some doubt until the All-Americans scored late in the 73rd minute after reserve center Dylan Lubbe fed the ball from the base of a ruck to reserve prop Mike Shephard who later saw the ball to wing Dustin Muhn.
The Rugby West Indies Select Sevens Team played into the Semi Finals of the Abbotsford International Sevens, being narrowly defeated 12-14 by Canada Alumni. RWI’s loss was extra tough as the conversion that would have tied the game and sent it to overtime went through the uprights and was good but was ruled wide by the referee. Kenya defeated Canada 19-17 in the final to win the tournament.

| Quote: | CHENNAI, India, July 31 (Reuters) - India's unfancied rugby sevens side must bulk up if they hope to make an impact at next year's Commonwealth Games, eating seven meals and at least 15 eggs a day, the country's South African coach said on Friday.
"I have told them (his players) they must eat at least 15 eggs a day, six for breakfast and the remaining nine any time, any how, during the day," the country's South African coach Norman Laker told the Telegraph newspaper on Friday.
"The players have three meals a day and that's not enough. In South Africa, elite rugby players have seven meals a day."
India is rated a lowly 83rd out of the 95 teams in the International Rugby Board rankings which are currently headed by South Africa.
"Indian players weigh 72-77 kg on an average whereas the international players weigh between 88 and 100 kg. That is the weight difference you have to make up," Laker said ahead of the team's departure to South Africa for a training stint.
India is hosting the Commonwealth Games in October 2010.

Today was the second meeting of the General Directorate of Professional Rugby League. Rugby Federation of Ukraine President Georgiy Dzhangyryan spoke to me about the outcome.
BO: -What are the results of the second meeting of the General Directorate PRL?
GD: The results are very positive. We have been able to find common language with many clubs, and a brief conclusion is thus: the Professional regbiynoy League teams will play 6: «Olympus» (Kharkov), «Credo-63» (Odessa), «Sokol» ( Lviv), «Dinamo Center» (Tiraspol), «Olimp» (Tiraspol). Adoption of the rules and Articles of PRL, so that we can safely speak of PRL as a fait accompli. Unfortunately, none of the Kiev team had not yet filed its candidacy to participate in the PRL, but it is likely that in the nearest future the situation will change and we will not be 6, but 8 teams.
BO: -Many clubs, without enthusiasm, the initiative creating PRL. How they managed to convince?
GD: Guide-many teams are simply not up to the deeper end to all the nuances, but explain to them the details, we have seen clubs that PRL - this new stage of development of Ukrainian rugby, to make this sport is not only popular, but profitable.
BO: -Will made some changes to the scheme of the Championship of Ukraine?
GD: Championship-2009 will be a transition, that is to be fully performed in autumn, but already from next year we will move on to the scheme «Spring Autumn», taking into account all the nuances that arise during the transition Championship.
BO: -What are the requirements for PRL clubs?
GD: In addition to financial participation in the project the only hard requirement is that clubs are obliged to hold the matches in stadiums that are not ashamed to show on TV, so we can demonstrate the quality of the picture and we would not have been ashamed of the product under the name «rugby».
BO: -Waiting there any changes in the team the higher leagues?
GD: They will play at the same time as the team PRL, but the rest of them all is still.

Eight weeks ago Leonard Peters was an American Football player possibly nearing the end of his NFL career. Today he is an international rugby player with a new lease of life and fresh ambitions in sport.
Peters was born in American Samoa and knew about rugby from an early age, but only because it was how his father filled his Saturday afternoons. Peters junior was not allowed to take up the sport and was never even taught the rules. Instead, his enviable athleticism and natural ability were successfully channelled towards the NFL.
Having made a name for himself in college Football at the University of Hawaii, Peters did well to recover from a knee injury in 2005 and win contracts with the New York Jets and, most recently, the Chicago Bears in American sport's most notorious playground.
At the age of 27 his career was at something of a crossroads, though, until he was approached by the USA Sevens coach, Al Caravelli.
"First of all I was really grateful - for any athlete trying to cross over to any sport it is very hard, no matter which sport, but I was happy that coach Al (Caravelli) took me under his wing, taught me the sport and it's been going great for me," said Peters, who has since competed for the USA after only six weeks in the game.
"Being an athlete helped a lot because obviously I could already run, jump, catch the ball, do all of that. It was learning the rules that was hard.
Cameraderie of Sevens rugby
"I was thinking that nobody was going to help me because you're competing for a spot on the team, but my eyes were really opened by how the guys would help me, teach me how to run angles and the plays.
"I was really drawn to the cameraderie on the team, really pleased that happened and I'm 100 per cent into rugby now."
Making it into Caravelli's team in such a short space of time is no mean feat. Once the whipping boys of world Sevens, the USA have developed a steely core over the last two seasons under the Argentine-born coach.
During the most recent IRB Sevens World Series, they reached two Cup quarter finals and a first ever Cup semi final with seasoned players like Todd Clever, Chris Wyles and Takudzwa Ngwenya. Although that trio has used the exposure to secure full time contracts overseas, they leave behind a healthy legacy.
Any new player coming into the squad is expected to meet the same lofty expectations, and rigorous fitness demands.
"I don't think I was prepared for all the running in Sevens," admitted Peters. "The conditioning was the biggest part for me coming over from (American) Football.
"In Football you run around for nine seconds and then you can rest for 45 seconds, whereas in rugby they told me 'we have to play for seven minutes', and I said 'seven minutes? I can play for seven minutes..'
Peters: "I was looking to the side line begging for coach to take me off"
"After the first minute I was looking towards the side line begging for coach to take me off, I was so tired. I wasn't prepared for that, but I've got used to it now."
Having impressed enough at the training camps to make the squad, Peters' international baptism came at the recent eight-team World Games Sevens tournament in Chinese Taipei. For the first time in his career, 'World' meant the world and he found himself playing against other countries.
"That was the one thing that really got me pscyched into rugby. In the NFL you play other states in the USA, not other countries, but rugby is on a global scale.
"You basically compete against the best athletes in the world and that really opened my eyes as to how many athletes are out there.
| Quote: | Royal Otto will captain Namibia this week as they set out to retain their CAR (Confederation of African Rugby) Under 19 title in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi and qualify as Africa’s representative at next year’s IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy.
Namibia edged Zimbabwe 16-13 in last year’s final and went on to finish fifth in the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy in Kenya in April, matching their placing in the inaugural tournament in 2008, in Chile.
A number of the players who represented Namibia at the Junior World Rugby Trophy will return to Nairobi for the CAR Championship, including wing Russel van Wyk, props Henk Roets and Grant Kurz, flanker Waldo Schaefer and centre Ashwin Walters.
Andre de Klerk also played in Kenya and a month later created history by becoming the first schoolboy to represent the Namibian senior team, when he made his Test debut off the bench in their Rugby World Cup 2011 qualifier against Ivory Coast.
Namibia, who have won three of the last four African championships, are the top seeds for the eight-team event, which runs from 4-10 August.
They have been drawn in Pool A with Morocco, hosts Kenya and Zambia, while the 2006 champions Zimbabwe head Pool B and face opening ties against Tunisia, Uganda and Kenya B, who have replaced Ivory Coast.
In Tuesday's opening fixtures Namibia face Zambia and Morocco tackle Kenya in Pool A, while Zimbabwe take on Uganda and Tunisia face Kenya B at the Rugby Football Union of East Africa Grounds in Nairobi.
Namibia Under 19 squad: Forwards: Franklin Bertolini, Gert Henning, Henk Roets, Grant Kurz, Daniel van Vuuren, Karel van Heerden, Andre de Klerk, Jacob Mare, Munee Tjiueza, Jaco Wiese, Waldo Schaefer, Royal Otto (Captain). Backs: Johannes Tromp, Russel van Wyk, Chase Diergaardt, Richard Ockhuizen, Gift Kamundu, Ashwin Lee Walters, Johan Deysel, Timothy Koopman, Zirk Coetzee, Thomas van der Merwe, Shipopyeni Handuukeme, Pieter Jansen van Vuuren.

"It was such a great experience - never in my dreams did I think I'd go to China (Chinese Taipei) to play any sport and never before had I played in an arena where the opposing team was cheered as much as the home side.
"The people in the States haven't really caught on to rugby yet, not because they don't think it's a great sport but because they don't know the rules, and I think if we get the bid to go into the Olympic Games it would send it over the edge.
"I told coach Al while we were still in Chinese Taipei that I caught the bug, I've really been drawn in."

Meanwhile in the jungle:
| Quote: | Kenya gave their fans something to cheer by beating Morocco 28-14 on the opening day of the CAR (Confederation of African Rugby) Under 19 Championship at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi on Tuesday.
The Kenyans, seeded one place below their opponents in fifth, scored three tries in the first half only for prop Asden Mahi’s try for Morocco cut the deficit to only seven points – 21-14 – at the interval.
David Ambunya crossed for the only try of the second half as Kenya, who produced some memorable performances to finish fourth at the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy on home soil back in April, emerged victorious.
Kenya could now face a semi final with top seeds Namibia – who were due to meet Zambia on day one – on Friday and with it the chance to avenge a heart-breaking last gasp 22-17 loss in the Junior World Rugby Trophy.
Zimbabwe to meet Tunisia
The other semi final will pit last year’s CAR Under 19 runners-up Zimbabwe against Tunisia after they overcame Uganda 25-0 and a Kenya Select side 45-5 respectively in the Pool B matches on day one.
Zimbabwe raced into a 14-0 lead inside 10 minutes against Uganda with tries from number 8 Bishelele Tshamala and centre Edward Mama. At one brief stage in the second half Zimbabwe had two players in the sin-bin but Uganda were unable to capitalise and instead full back Dennis Robertson scored a fourth try nine minutes from time to seal the victory.
Tunisia proved too strong for the Kenya Select side, who had stepped in following Ivory Coast’s withdrawal. Number 8 Ahmed Charni scored two of Tunisia’s five tries in the first half as they went in leading 35-0.
Two further tries followed for Tunisia in the second half as they played the final half hour with 14 men following prop Chahir Aoudi’s red card. Kenya Select did get on the scoreboard with centre Oscar Ayodi’s try just past the hour mark.
Kenya Select will now face Uganda on Friday with Morocco expected to meet Zambia, but all eyes will be on the semi finals to see which two nations will keep alive their hopes of winning the title and securing Africa’s berth at the IRB Junior World Rugby Trophy 2010.

Albania - Sunday june 7th the stadium of Montereale Valcellina (north-east of Italy) could have hosted the first match of albanian "national team" ("Kombetarja Shqiptare"). It had to be a friendly match against a selection of Pordenone provence (Italy), but I don't know if they have been able to collect quite players to make an albanian team. The absence of post-match news seems to say that there has been no match. In the pre-match press, the organizers were directly searching for every player with albanian passport anxious to play. http://www.aiarugby.net/modules.php?nam ... cle&sid=35
Liechtenstein - The Eschen&Mauren Lynx, only rugby club of the kingdom, will play also in this season in the swiss championship. In Swtizerland there are 40 teams (not bad), divided in five league: A, B, C, league west, league east (where Lynx play). I think the only significant TM for Liechtenstein would be against San Marino: the level of the two teams appears not too much dissimilar (bottom of swiss and bottom of italian championship) and the two countries are not too far each other so it could be a one-day trip. The other "little states" are too strong (Cyprus, Andorra, Malta, Monaco, Luxembourg) or not playing rugby (Iceland and Montenegro). Liechtenstein organizes the 2011 Little States Games, but rugby is not one of the scheduled sports. In 2008/09 Lynx finished 9th on east league (ten teams) with 1 win, 1 draw and 16 losses; San Marino 8th in italian serie C (ten teams in its pool) with 6 victories and 12 losses.
Singapore - The final of the women's XV championship between Blacks and SRC has been postponed to 8 august as two players from SRC are suspected to be infected with the H1N1 virus.

While India performed well enough to finish third in the HSBC Asian 5 Nations Division II this year, the team's South African coaching staff have had to prescribe radical dietary measures in a bid to help the team compete on a global scale.
A recent 44-3 victory against Pakistan in the 15-a-side game boosted the team's morale, but coaches Norman Laker and Hendre Marnitz are now asking their players to eat up to 15 eggs a day in order to pack on the weight necessary to compete at full international level.
India hosts next year's Commonwealth Games in Delhi and, with Sevens rugby a key element in the multisport event, the hosts face the daunting prospect of lining up against the world's best sides.
"The guys are too light and to go and compete in the Commonwealth Games they will be 15 to 20 kilograms lighter than the opposition," Laker told Total Rugby Radio.
"We've been struggling quite a lot to get any form of supplements from the Sports Authority of India and, because we have a weight problem with our guys, we told them that they need to eat as many eggs as they can, every single day.
"It's been working quite well, particularly for the guys who were 62-65kg. Obviously some days you can't eat as many because you don't feel like it, but we want to try and get them all to eat at least 12 eggs a day because in Indian food you don't tend to get very big portions of meat, just a little chicken for protein, which is not enough.
"We've been doing three or more training sessions every day and top players doing that in South Africa for example might eat five to six meals a day - our boys only get three."
Last year, Laker and Marnitz coached Sri Lanka for four months and were successful in 'beefing up' players who were also naturally light.
The difference was evident at this year's Hong Kong Sevens, where the Sri Lankans were a far more physical proposition than ever before. Although they lost all four of their matches, they were not completely over-run by New Zealand and Australia in a tough pool and gave both Zimbabwe and Japan tough games.
Indian Rugby Football Union chiefs will now be hoping that the duo can have a similar effect on their own rugby scene, but in order to make a real difference they also need the players to play more competitive Sevens.
As has been proved by the likes of Kenya, Portugal, Tunisia and USA on the World Series, it is only by lining up regularly against the best that teams start to genuinely compete. With that in mind, Laker has also planned a busy schedule in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Games.
"We've only been in India for three months and the talent is definitely there but they do need a lot of rugby-orientated skills," he added.
"They haven't been coached the last few years and there are some boys who have only been playing rugby for two or three years, so they have a lot to learn.
"I think they will be able to put up a good fight against a lot of the sides (in the Commonwealth Games), I wouldn't say they'd be able to beat them, but hopefully they can put up a good fight."
Some look at things that are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were and ask why not?
